Author Interviews

Interview: Simone Elkeles, author of the ‘Perfect Chemistry’ series

December 12, 2010

Simone Elkeles, author of such amazing novels as Perfect Chemistry and Leaving Paradise joins us today to answer a few questions about her work; past, present and future as well as what we can expect coming our way in the future! Remember, Chain Reaction, the third installment in the Perfect Chemistry series comes out on the 24th of May, 2011! I don’t know about you, but I’m itching to read it! And check out that amazing cover!

Q: What’s the best aspect of being a published author?

My fans! They are passionate and the emails I receive definitely inspire me to write more books. When I get an email saying a teen who hated to read but because of my books now loves to read it is amazing and surreal. When readers say that reading one of my books has inspired them to write their own book, it’s the coolest feeling! When someone says they look at people differently and don’t judge them because my books taught them you can’t judge someone by the color of their skin or their social status, I love that!

Q: What makes your novels different from everything else available at the moment?

My books are edgy, real and quick-paced. I write the way teens talk and I write about things they care about. There are so many big things that happen can happen when you are a teen: first love, first heartbreak, learning to drive, making friends, losing friends, finding your place in the high school food chain. I love it!

Q: How do you go about naming your characters? Are they derived from people you know, favourite characters of yours or in tribute to someone/something that means a lot to you? Or are they simply picked at random?

I get asked that question all the time. Listen, if you were obnoxious in high school, your name is somehow connected to the rude girls in my books. My friends laugh when I say to beware of pissing me off because you just might find yourself in one of my books (although Darlene was a great friend of mine in school and she’s the mean girl in Perfect Chemistry and Madison is the daughter of my best friend and the mean girl in Rules of Attraction). I’m a girl scout leader, so I use a lot of my girls’ names in my books. I use last names of people I know most of the time or I make them up. I will also go to baby name websites and find names that I like. Sometimes I even use names off of my fan mail. My fans have some very cool names!

Q: At the moment, what are you:

Reading: nothing at the moment. I’m trying to concentrate on Chain Reaction.
Craving: Red Velvet Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory
Watching: Little People, Big World… I can’t believe it’s the last season
Eagerly awaiting: The release of Chain Reaction!

Q: If you had full ‘casting power’ over the film adaptation of “Perfect Chemistry“, who would you cast as your characters?

I get asked this question pretty often. As a matter of fact, there is an entire conversation going on my discussion group about the best actors for my characters. All I know for sure is that I would like Alexander F Rodriguez as Alex and Giancarlo Vidrio as Carlos. They did a great job in my book trailer for Rules of Attraction. If you haven’t seen it, you can check it out on youtube: here.

Q: Is there another author’s book-to-film adaptation you’re looking forward to seeing?

It’s already out, but I’m definitely excited to see Flipped. It’s such a great story! It’s one of the books that inspired me to write in alternating boy and girl points of view.

Q: Have you had any particular ‘stand out’ moments when meeting readers of your books?

Any time I meet a fan that tells me that one of my books had changed their life,it’s completely amazing. I’ve actually had more than one fan tell me that reading Perfect Chemistry has inspired them to get out of their gang and go to college. There’s almost no greater reward for an author!

Q: Do you have any intention of dipping your writing-toes into the paranormal/supernatural realm of YA books?

I never say never, but right now I don’t have any plans to change genres. I think my gifts lie in the realistic. I know it’s part of why my fans love my books.

Q: After the ‘Perfect Chemistry‘ series comes to a close, what can we expect to see from you?

I have so many ideas and I’m really excited to introduce new characters to my fans. As soon as my publishers and I decide what I should do next, I’ll make sure to let everyone know!

I really hope she doesn’t go paranormal on us. If she does, I’m worried she’ll be just like all the other books (well, with better writing, but still). I like that she’s unique and not buying into the whole vampire thing.
