Interview: Robin Bridges, author of ‘The Gathering Storm’

November 1, 2011

I want to give a very warm welcome to Robin Bridges today on the blog! Robin is the author behind the much anticipated The Gathering Storm, a book that I’m more than excited to read! Imperial russia? Historical/Supernatural YA? Necromancers? Count me in!

Q: ‘The Gathering Storm‘ is the first book in the Katerina Alexandrovna series, which (in a nutshell) focuses on a Russian Duchess who can raise the dead. How much research did you have to perform before penning the series, and how much historical fact did you decide to include?

Lots! I decided to create a LibraryThing account just for the Russian history I was researching. A lot of the original plot had to be revised as I dug deeper into research and discovered more about the members of the Russian aristocracy. I exchanged emails with a history professor in Germany for information on 19th century medical schools. And I would love to visit Russia some day- once I learn to speak Russian!

Q: Can you tell us how many books are predicted for Katerina’s story? Do you already have those books mapped out?

Delacorte bought the books as a trilogy, and yes, they are all written!

Q: I love reading YA titles that revolve around Imperial Russia, but ‘The Gathering Storm‘ is the first I’ve come across that has a strong focus on the supernatural. Why did you decide on both the time period and the place in order to tell Katerina’s story?

I’ve always loved supernatural stories and I always loved Russian fairy tales. Picking one generation of Romanovs to write about was the hardest part of my research. There were so many interesting time periods to choose from. But I think the late nineteenth century, the Russian Silver Age, is my favorite period- the age of Tchaikovsky and Faberge.

Q: As a writer, how do you ‘get in the zone’ for writing? Do you have any ‘must-haves’ that are essential to your process?

I stole this idea from fellow YA writer Marissa Doyle: scented candles to help get into my writing zone. For the Katerina books, I found an exotic cinnamon and frankincense candle by Yankee that I love.

Q: And finally, how do you plan to celebrate the release of ‘The Gathering Storm‘?

We’re making plans for that right now! My local independent book store, Bay Books, has graciously offered to host a launch party and we’re working with the Red Cross to include a blood drive at the event.

A big thank you to Robin for answering my questions. The Gathering Storm comes out on January 10, 2012 and looks to be one of those books that hits all the marks! If you’ve already ready the book, why not drop us a line in the comments and tell us what you think?

I looove the time period she chose and the Romanovs is probably my favorite thing about it! This is such a must-read and I’m looking forward to it even more now :)
